More wedding pictures

On the 2nd January I showed you a wedding picture of a couple from 1913. Today I have received (from Mimregubben) wedding pictures of their three sons. They all married in Bergen, Norway.

THE TABLECLOTH -- which it took 3 generations and 45 years to make!

My grandfather started making this tablecloth in the middle of the 1950s. When he died shortly after, only 50 years old, my father took over. However, some years later, he also died at the age of 50 - and the tablecloth was still unfinished. 20 years later I decided to finish off what they had started, even though I was a bit scared that the same thing would happen to me. However, I completed the work in year 2000 and I'm now over 60 years old, so I think the "curse" has been broken....

Today I'll show you some pictures of things to hang on your front door for Christmas. It's always nice to visit friends, especially if they bid you welcome with a pretty decoration.... These decorations are from the 1950/-60s and is sent me by Mimregubben.

In today's Advent calendar you find a little "Santa-Claus-village". It was made by my father in the 1950s as a gift for my aunt. Many years later, in the 1980s she gave it to me as a present. And now I can't picture a Christmas without it....

Here comes "Santa Claus" - or actually three of this little fellow.... They come from a shop that used them as window decoration in the 1950s.

Today we open the first "window" of the Advent calendar. And here we find two Christmas ornaments that dates back to the 1950s and in my opinion are for decorating the Christmas tree. 

This picture is sent to me by my regular contributor "Mimregubben" - and it's thanks to him that I got the idea to make this Advent calendar here on the blog. Apart from today's picture he sent me some others that I will show you later, but it made me think that most people have some kind of Christmas ornament that they're particularly fond of, and why don't show it here on the blog?

What is your favourite Christmas ornament from your childhood?

An update: It seems that these ornaments were bought to be hung from some lamps on the wall instead of being used for the Christmas tree. 

Ballet dancers

These two ballet dancers I've inherited from my aunt. I remeber from the 1950s and -60s that she used them for decoration on the table when she had dinner parties.

She put them onto two little mirrors which she placed on each side of a some flowers she also used for decoration. Sometimes she also used tulle to make it even prettier. My auntie always made a really big effort to make the tables look wonderful and she often made the table the day before the "big event" (Almost like Hyacinth in "Keeping up appearances").

My old doll

This doll has been mine for 60 years. I don't know exactly when it was given to me, but on the first picture I'm around one year. The doll is wearing a dress at the moment, but all I can remember is a green overall it had for a long time. (picture no 2). Poor doll, she didn't have many clothes. The doll was made of some kind of soft fabric and the head, made of celluloid was sewn onto the body by my grandma.

The doll ended up in the attic where it stayed for quite a long time until I took pity on it and made a new dress for her and bought her new shoes and stockings. And than I put her on display in the living room. However, at the moment she's back in the attic...

Paper dolls

I found these paper dolls when I was spring cleaning and started thinking about life in the old days... When I was a little girl, paper dolls often came enclosed in the glossy magazines. 

Where we lived there was one of those shops that sold "everything" you needed for the house and they also sold sheets with different paper dolls. I can still remember how the shop smelled of everything from paint to detergents and perfume...  I remember that when we bought the detergent we brought a bottle from home to be filled with the detergent from the shop....

Me and my girl friends spent hours cutting out pictures of furnitures from the magazines and this we used to making a "home" for the paper dolls. I don't know if the children today are still playing with paper dolls?

It's possible that these particular paper dolls are from the time when my daughter grew up in the 1970s, but paper dolls hasn't changed at all since the 1950s, I think. Anyway, it was nice finding them after all these years..

Old baby prams

I think it's interesting to see how the prams has changed during the decades... The first picture is showing my mum's in 1927. The second one is my own from 1950 and the third one is my brother's from 1957. I would love to see other types of prams both from Norway and abroad. Anyone?

My new outfit for the Constitution Day

This is how you were dressed if you were born in Norway in the 1950s. The picture is from the Norwegian Constitution Day which we celebrate every 17th May. (Click on the link to read more about the Constitution Day). As a rule the children get new clothes for this particular day and here you see me in my new "outfit". The coat is tailor made - believe it or not.... I wanted badly a pair of shoes (moccasins) that were in fashion at that time, but they were too expensive so I had to make do with shoes that only slightly resembled those I wanted in the first place and I remember getting blisters when I had them on. And literally the icing on the cake was the stupid looking hat they put on my head. I really did NOT want it, but I had no saying in that department so all I could do was putting on an unhappy face, as you might see...

A birthday party some 50 years ago...

This is a Norwegian birthday party for children in 1957. Here they have made the table with the finest tablecloth and the cups and plates that were only used for special occasions. The children were served hot chocolate with cream to drink and I remember that we were sitting around the table almost in "awe". I'm sitting right in the middle of the picture and my cousin who is the birthday girl is sitting on my right hand side.

Toys from the "good, old days"....

Here are some pictures of toys that were used in Norway around 50-60 years ago.

This duck is a toy that you could wind up and then the duck wiggles around, looking like he's picking up pieces of food from the ground.... Click to watch the duck "live".

Other toys are the little racing cars you can see on the picture below. The children used them to compete with. They let the cars roll down a piece of plank and the car that made it the farthest had won...

 

And if someone were lucky enough to get hold of some wires they made those bracelets you can also see on the picture below.
